Halloween-Purrrfect Kitty

Hey everybody!   I’ve been so focused on busting out of the NICU,  I completely forgot about choosing my Halloween costume.  My cousins are known for having the best ideas like a Spider Princess and a Bat Princess.  They are so smart like that, and Aunt Jenni is very creative.  I stayed up all night fretting over my costume but all the good ideas I came up with needed my Daddy’s participation.  He is working far away so those ideas will have to wait until next year.  I finally threw my hands in the air and said  “Mommy, you’ve gotta come up with something for me.”

So Mommy said “Anna Catherine you are so perfect, I have a Purrrrfect Kitty costume just for you.  Its black and orange, we can paint your nose like a kitty and give you kitty whiskers and a big orange bow”.  But the real big surprise was when the nurses took me Trick or Treat’n around the NICU riding in a big red wagon.  The whole operation was under the guise of “testing my portable equipment” but it was really all about having fun and visiting all my NICU friends that I’ll miss dearly once I’m discharged.

Zooming around in a speedy red wagon had me scared at first.  But I found my courage with the help of my Wubbanub friend.  After a while I was having a great time looking around and seeing how tall everyone was.  Adults are funny looking with their big people pants.

I had such a wonderful time seeing all my NICU friends.  Thanks so much to everyone who helped make this day special.

Here are some photos of my Halloween Trick or Treat adventure:

Before you know it I’ll be bigger and  real good at picking out Halloween costumes.  I’ll probably be so good at it that I’ll even pick out costumes for Mommy and Daddy next year.  Email my mommy and me at ThibodeauxMom@live.com and tell us about your Halloween costume.  When I wake up from my nap she will read your messages to me.

Stay cute America!

Hello everyone!  I wanted to give you a quick update on my progress…  I’m now 7 months old, weigh 6 pounds 15 ounces and I’m 20 inches long.

As of today I am back on the vapotherm to help me breathe.  I like listening to my Mommy and GiGi read to me and I like when friends hold my pacifier for me.  I’ve been doing a lot of sleeping and growing.

Anna Catherine Update 08/28/2014

First of all I want to apologize for the delayed update.

Anna Catherine is now weighing 6 pounds and 9 ounces… she is on her way to 7!!! She now smiles from time to time, she still loves her pacifier, hates bath time, and she is tolerating tummy time a little more.

We were told a couple of weeks ago that Anna Catherine would be coming home by the end of this week, so I started packing up things so her stuff could fit in my room, that baby of mine has a lot of stuff!!! Well, the Dr spoke too soon…Anna Catherine had a breathing spell and she had to be placed back on the ventilator (she is now off the ventilator) so the surgeon brought her back to scope her and her esophagus had narrowed a lot since he reconnected it. So now we are set up for the surgeon to look at her esophagus and dilate it weekly. Hopefully we will not have any more set backs and we will be on our way home!

Please continue to keep her in your prayers

Love,
Danyale

Anna Catherine is having surgery today at 2pm. Please keep her in your prayers.

The NICU celebrated Anna Catherine’s 6 month (1/2) birthday on Friday.  I cannot believe that Anna Catherine has been with us that long.  Seems just like yesterday when she was born.

Anna Catherine now weighs 6 lbs. 4.5 oz and she measures 18.9 inches.

My Daddy and Me

When I was little I had a replogle in my mouth.  All I could think about was how to get it out.  More drool to soften the tape, wiggle my tongue round and round to cork screw the replogle out.  My nurse would spend all day thinking of ways to tape it down real good,  and I would spend all day thinking of ways to get it out real good.  It was a fun game we played daily.

But now I am a big girl, with no more replogle, so I have more time to think about big girl things.  Recently I was thinking about getting into college.

You can’t get into college unless you have good grades.  You can’t get good grades unless you write a paper for school.  School papers are not easy, so I don’t want to wait until the last minute.  Therefore I decided to get started while I am sitting around waiting to bust out of the NICU.

My paper is called “My Daddy and Me”.  I am sharing my rough draft with you today hoping to receive some constructive feedback.  Remember its a work in progress, and is not due for many years, so be gentle.

Anna Catherine Update 07/22/2014

Hello everyone!  I wanted to give you a quick update on my progress…  I now weigh a big 5 pounds 14.5 ounces and I’m 18.9 inches long.

I have been a very big girl since my last update!  I am steadily gaining weight and I’m on vapotherm to help me breathe.  Occupational and physical therapist’s are working with me grasping and holding things.  Sometimes I get tired and just want to sleep and let my friends and family hold my pacifier and toys for me.  I sleep through the night and I’m awake during the day…  Mommy is so proud of me and my accomplishments.

An Eventful Week

This past week was very eventful for Anna Catherine and she is doing extremely well.

Her big surgery was last Tuesday and a great success.  After such a big event the doctors put her back on the ventilator so she could rest and focus on healing.  One week later her lungs have recovered to the point where the doctors feel comfortable weening her off the ventilator down to the vapotherm system.  This is a positive step in the right direction.

Yesterday the surgeon ran some scheduled tests to see how Anna Catherine is healing.  He reports that everything is looking good.  Therefore he removed her chest tube which means Mommy can hold her again.

Anna Catherine now weighs a big 6 lbs 1 oz and is a 19 inches long!

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers,

Love,
Danyale Thibodeaux

Gaining Weight + Big Surgery

Hello everyone!  I wanted to give you a quick update on my progress…  I now weigh a whopping 5 pounds 6.6 ounces!  I have been working very hard to gain weight.  Last night’s weight gain had Mommy so excited.

I’ll be having my big surgery tomorrow at 9:00 in the morning.  Please say a prayer for me, the surgeon, the staff caring for me, and my recovery.  This is the surgery that has been talked about since the day I was born and it’s finally here!  After this the talk around NICU will be my recovery and the next steps to getting me home!

5 months old already!

Wow, a lot has happened since my last update…..I rode in an airplane to Dallas, I had TWO eye surgeries, flew back to Baton Rouge, moved into my new room at Woman’s Hospital, and I am 5 months old today!

The below picture is me being rolled into the room and 2 of my primary nurses (Erica and Selena) and some flight staff from the Dallas hospital.

I am pleased to say that I am 5 pounds and 2 ounces, I am now unable to fit into any of my micro preemie outfits, so mommy has packed all of my old outfits and put them up for me to play with my baby dolls when I am older.  I am now wearing my preemie size clothes…they are a little big, but mommy says that I am a big girl!

Within the last 2 weeks I have grown really fond of my pacifier, I am still too little to hold it all by myself, so I open my mouth wide and shake my head back and forth for anyone to stand at my bedside and hold it in my mouth for me.  Mommy also tells me that I am just like my daddy and show all of my feelings/emotions on my face.  My daddy doesn’t have a poker face and apparently I don’t either.

This is a video of my mommy holding me while I am sucking my pacifier and looking around.

Anna Catherine Update 06/20/2014

Hey ya’ll just a quick update to let you know I’m 5 lbs 1 oz and 17.5 inches tall.

Its been a real exciting week for me. My Daddy flew home to see me and Ms Joylynn took a whole lot of photos of us together. Everyone is telling me that I look so much like my daddy. I don’t see what they are talking about, he is taller and has longer hair. We had a great Fathers Day together, Nurse Katie helped me make a Fathers Day card using my footprints in the shape of a heart. Daddy likes to play games with me and my toys. He also tickles my cheeks, arms, and nose.

Tuesday I flew in a private airplane to the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas TX to meet some new friends.  This was my first trip outside of the NICU and first time flying in an airplane. Deep down I think I’m a traveler like my daddy, so I was real excited to get out and see the world.  It was lots of fun, there is so much to see and look at.  I like looking around as my transport team takes me places. I missed my primary nurses, but Nurse Britney from the Dallas transport team took real good care of me. Below is a photo of the special bed she brought for me.

Miss USA

Last week we found out that the Miss USA team wanted to pay me a visit.  All the pretty contestants are in Baton Rouge for the big Miss USA pageant this week.  The girls wanted to swing by and  talk to us, take some photos, videos, and learn about the great team working at Woman’s hospital.

Mommy asked the doctor and the doctor said:  “Anna Catherine you are doing so good.  Your friends from Miss USA can come visit as long as they wash their hands real good and take their temperature.”

Gigi, Mommy, and I were real excited.   Gigi made me a pretty pink sash that read “Miss NICU”.  The nurses hung pretty letters over my crib that spelled my name.

I was in the middle of a good nap when all my friends from Miss USA came to see me.  I could hardly open my eyes.  At best I could only open one eye at a time.  For the most part I slept during all of this excitement.  But thirty minutes after all the excitement was over I was wide awake and ready to play.  Go figure.

The girls talked to Mommy for a long time asking all kind of questions about me.  They were so nice and friendly. They signed my blanket with sweet messages and gave me a beautiful tiara.

Anna Catherine

I like to suck my pacifier, ride in my swing, and be held by my mommy every day!

I have been working very hard getting off of the ventilator .  First the doctors downgraded me from the ventilator to vapotherm;  As of yesterday I have been downgraded from vapotherm to a high flow cannula.  My mommy tells me how proud she is of me; I’m breathing like a big girl!

Mommy has been busy with me and with the new house.  She met with Ellen to pick out fabric for drapes, my drapes are going to be so pretty!  Mommy also met with Anthony and Ellen to discuss our cabinets for the house, this was not nearly as much fun as the fabric!

Hey ya’ll just a quick update to let you know I’m 4 lbs 14.6 oz.   I am also getting taller, measuring in at 15.75 inches.

I am so happy to be almost 5 pounds.  Mommy cant believe how much I have grown from my birth weight of 1 lbs 4 oz.   All this growing should soon accelerate because I am now up to full feeds for the first time ever.  10 days ago I had a successful surgery so now I’m getting fed solely by milk… so bye-bye lipids (fat) and by-by TPN (nutrients).

Also yesterday I noticed the rain-forest mobile grandma bought me.  I love watching the the pretty birds fly around before falling asleep.

Happy Mother’s Day – Part 1

Happy Mother’s Day everyone, I hope each of you have a wonderful day.

Isn’t it amazing how one little person can change your whole world.  I’ve been looking through photos and thinking about how well Danyale has adapted to being a Mother.  I’ve watched her over the years care for her nieces and cousins with amazing thoughtfulness and compassion.  I had no doubt she would be a good mom when her time came, but it’s truly amazing to witness how one little person has transformed my wife… forever.

Years ago I joked with Danyale about how I wished she would grow up and became a responsible mother; waking up earlier, fixing breakfast, planning her day, being responsible, being less random, less sporadic. Well that day has come and it’s a beautiful thing.

Speaking of beautiful, in celebration of Mother’s day, I’ve put together a 5 part photo series photos showing Danyale in action.  Each day between Sunday and Thursday, four – never seen before photos will be released.  I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do.

My Thoughts On Broccoli

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my favorite things.  I’m so little right now, I haven’t had the opportunity to get to know all the typical favorites things in the world.  My Mommy is my favorite person and Fuzzy Lamb is my favorite friend, but that is as far as I’ve gotten.  What’s my favorite color?  What’s my favorite toy?  What’s my favorite song?  By the time I’m bigger I’ll need to have all these things picked out.  Its overwhelming.

So I’m trying to use my time wisely and start choosing some favorite things while I’m hanging out in the NICU.  My favorite person and favorite friend were easy.  The next logical favorite to choose is my favorite food.  All they give me is milk right now, and that ok… but its hardly favorite material.  If I understand things correctly, one day Mommy is gonna loosen up, when she’s ready she’ll give me the good stuff like strawberries, cotton candy, and dipped ice-cream cones.  How is a baby supposed to choose?  There are so many foods out there like Pizza, Watermelon, and Mongolian beef.  Apple Jacks, McDonald’s, and Butter Cream Frosting.  Snow-cones, Broccoli, and Chick-a-lay.

Wait a minute… whats Broccoli doing on this list.  Is broccoli really anyone’s favorite.  I know daddy likes broccoli… but does he loovvve it?  Who loves broccoli?  Broccoli is so bad, it gives me the shivers.  Just thinking about it causes me to completely loose control of my face.  My face goes from this:

2014-04-26 19.49.32_compress-doc

to this:

2014-04-26 19.49.29_compress-doc

So anyway, ruling out broccoli gets me one step closer to choosing my favorite food.  Before you know it I’ll be bigger and I’ll need to have all these favorites picked out.  Let me know what your favorite food is.  You can email my mommy at ThibodeauxMom@live.com and she will relay your message to me when I wake up from my nap.

Stay cute America!

Anna Catherine

Anatomy Of A Yawn

When you are a baby it is important to master the art of yawning.  Many babies in the NICU take their cuteness for granted and develop sloppy yawning techniques.  Neither baby nor adult onlookers get maximum satisfaction from a hastily executed yawn or a yawn with minimal effort.  Today I have put together a four part guide and photo demonstration to help babies’ worldwide master the art of yawning.

Step one is to begin from a rested state.  A yawn takes a lot of energy when you are less than 4 pounds, therefore it is essential that you begin from a well-rested state.  It also amplifies the cuteness when you frame the event between innocent baby rest poses.

Yawn Step 1

Step two is to start slow.  You don’t want to overdo it, remember you were just born and not as strong as those 10 pound babies swinging from the rafters in dolphin section. Ease into the yawn; make sure no hoses are in the way and that the tape wont pull your cheeks.  An added benefit is that this gives all the mommies a chance to whip out their camera in time for the grand finale.

Yawn Step 2

Step three is where you give it all you got.  Maximize airflow by squinching your eyes, tucking your chin, and mouth open wide.  You know you’re doing it right if you can feel a tingle in your spine towards the back of your neck.  Correct posture here is essential, a last minute cramp once you begin can ruin the whole thing.

Yawn Step 3

Step four is where you hold it.  This is the step when most babies give up, but I find that you can get triple the outcome if you just hold it a few seconds longer.  Remember mommies don’t always get the perfect shot with their smartphone and may need to adjust focus, or take it out of video mode.  That’s why I push my yawn out an extra few seconds; you get more essential airflow and give everyone time to get off the couch and see your performance.  Because I started in a well-rested state I have the spare energy to really go all out, giving mommy 110% during this time.  Step four is a little extra work but it’s guaranteed to maximize results. You’ll feel better and the adults watching you will be twice as happy.

Yawn Step 4

That’s all there is to it, with a little practice you’ll be yawning like a pro.  I hope you enjoyed my four steps to a successful yawn.  Try these techniques for yourself and let me know how they work for you.  You can email my Mommy at ThibodeauxMom@live.com, she will relay your messages to me when I wake up from my nap.

Stay Cute America!

 Love,
Anna Catherine

Roller-Coaster Face

I have been doing a lot of thinking about what I want to do when I get bigger. One thing that is one my mind is roller-coasters.

My cousins are 5 and 3 years older than me,  so they will have much more experience doing things like eating dipped ice-cream cones, petting puppy dogs, and riding roller-coasters. I’m sure before too long we’ll find ourselves riding roller-coasters together. I don’t want them thinking I’m a baby and don’t know what I’m doing, so I have been practicing my roller-coaster face.

If I understand the rules correctly one must close your eyes and raise your hands in the air and say “weee” when the roller-coaster goes real fast. This creates the appropriate roller-coaster face like an experienced roller-coaster pro. I have been practicing my roller-coaster face when my swaddling gets loose enough.

Let me know if you see any things I can do to improve my roller-coaster face. Before I know it I’ll be riding them with my cousins so I want to get it right. You can email my mommy at ThibodeauxMom@live.com and she will relay your message to me when I wake up from my nap.

Stay cute America!

Easter Dress By Gi Gi

My Gi Gi made me an Easter Dress, actually she made me a couple Easter dresses.  I started growing so fast, before we knew it I was too big for my original dress.  So Gi Gi made me a bigger dress that was purple and full of ruffles.

On Easter Mommy dressed me, and played with me. Friends and family gave me lots of clothes, cards, and stuffed animals. We had a photo party with 7 nurses joining in to help out. I was fussy at first, but we ended up having so much fun. I love all my nurses and I love my Mommy!

Sorry Gi Gi, I know you worked so hard on my first dress.  I’ll make it up to you with big-big kisses next Easter.

Big thanks to Nurse Shannon for buying me some good bunny ears.  I couldn’t give my inaugural Easter address without a proper set of bunny ears.  Also big thanks to Nurse Jayna for helping me sit up for my my photo shoot.  I love my nurses!

Here is a game for all my fans out there, guess if I was laughing or fussing during this photo shoot?  The photos below may help give you a clue.  Don’t worry, daddy has the most incriminating photos behind lock and key.

Love ya,

Anna Bunny

Friends Host First Baby Shower

Baby Shower

My first baby shower was hosted by Margaret and Mary Ellen at the beautiful Lake House in Baton Rouge. I am so thankful for the effort and time they gave up to make this day so spectacular! They blew me away with their creativity, this was the most beautiful baby shower I have ever seen.

Friends from work, pokeno, book club, and the new neighborhood were invited. I feel so blessed having so many of my friends celebrate our sweet little miracle, Anna Catherine.

Little Hands Getting Bigger

Little Hands Getting Bigger

Wow, what a difference two months make.  Today I was looking at photos of Anna Catherine’s little hands.  Particularly I was looking at some recent photos where she was holding Danyale’s finger.  Then it hit me, I had a much earlier photo showing Danyale holding Anna Catherine’s tiny hand.  Putting them side by side helps demonstrate how much Anna Catherine is growing.  At first she could barely grip Danyale’s finger tip, now she can hold on tight to her whole finger.  I love her little hands.

Time To See What I Can Do

My Respiratory Therapist, Stephanie, tells me this is my song: “Let it Go”, from the movie “Frozen”.

The line in the song: “Time to see what I can do… to test the limits and break through” sums up where I am at in life.  Knocking down roadblocks and overcoming obstacles.  Hey doc just give me a milestone and I’ll achieve it.

Arms Wide Open

Arms Wide Open

I love this photo and the accompanying videos Danyale sent me.  Anna Catherine had her arms wide open and her “Big Girl Eyes” were out in full force.  In the video she is actively moving her eyes looking all around being very inquisitive.  I look at these photos and watch these videos all day long.

Her First Pacifier

Her First Pacifier

Anna Catherine had been moving her tongue and sucking on her tube for quite a while. Today Nurse Shannon gave her a treat; her first pacifier.  Shannon brought a teeny tiny pacifier from the back room, when Danyale gave it to Anna Catherine she instantly began sucking on it. It was so cute. I have a video of the instant it happened. Priceless.

Tiny Feet

Anna Catherine is so tiny. Now that most of the fluid has come off her, her arms and legs are so skinny. Above is a photo of her tiny feet. When we touch her feet she curls her toes as if trying to grab our finger. When we move our hands away she extends her legs searching for our hands again. At this time there isn’t many ways to play with Anna Catherine, but these foot games are fun for all of us.

p.s. I love those skinny chicken legs.

She Is Wearing Our Rings

Our Sweet Baby Girl is so tiny, today the nurse had us take a photo with Anna Catherine wearing our wedding rings on her arm.  In the photo you can see how Nurse Shannon fixed Anna Catherine’s hair with a pretty pink bow.

The nurses also showed us how Anna Catherine likes to be hand swaddled by cupping our hands around her head and bottom, or by gently placing our hands over her legs.  They say it makes her feel like she is in the womb.  No mater how active Anna Catherine is, she falls asleep as soon as Mommy hand swaddles her.

Fuzzy

Today our nurse had Anna Catherine posed in the cutest way… She was hugging Fuzzy Lamb as she napped.  Anna Catherine was swollen from all the fluid and the lamb helped elevate her arms to let the swelling drain.

The lamb is from our friends at Oh Baby in Baton Rouge.  Oh Baby is one of our favorite stores and Ms Mary Lou is the sweetest person I’ve ever met.
